Upscale hotel in a medieval castle, offering elegant quarters, a plush spa & a Tuscan restaurant.
Such an incredible experience. Located in a castle overlooking valleys and vineyards with the most incredible sunsets. 6 days of Bliss. Our journey was made exta special by the amazing team. So many names to mention but Valentina the Sommelier, Luca, Frederika, Alessio, Valeria and so many more. The front desk and conceirge were fantastic as we're the housekeeping team. Nothing was ever a problem and they were always happy and smiling. My background in events and hotels always makes me appreciate an incredible team. The only comments I would have for others is to book a room with a balcony as we spent alot of time there, be warned the thermal pools are hot and not as refreshing as they would be in cooler months however they feel amazing after long walks and in the evening. The food and drinks are priced accordingly due to the remote location. We did a few day trips as well and highly recommend the wine tour with lunch. They have Ebikes for those wanting adventure as well as Vespa rentals. Truly a fantastic location in one of the most beautiful settings...and the food was out of this world!
Welcome to Paradise. After a spirited drive up the mountain with spectacular views of the vineyards and the Val d’Orcia, we arrived at the front gate of Castello di Velona. The gates opened and welcomed us onto a cypress and olive-tree-lined driveway leading to the top of the castle. As we exited our car, we were rewarded with the most spectacular view of the Val d’Orcia. Offering an unobstructed 360-degree view of the valley and rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see, this vista is only magnified by the sunrise and sunset. We arrived earlier than the check-in time, but happily, our room was ready for us, which was a huge relief given our luggage for a 27-day journey. The room was very charming: a junior suite with Tuscan flavor overlooking the valley. It was in like new condition with all the amenities, including a double-sink bathroom and two TVs (no Netflix, just YouTube). It was a very comfortable, Tuscan-decorated room on the main floor for our five-night stay. Breakfast each morning was very special, overlooking the infinite Val d’Orcia valley. It was included in our room rate, which is a must when you book a room. Since you are located in a medieval castle, going out for a quick coffee or breakfast is difficult. For that matter, having dinner outside the resort is also not practical unless you are willing to take a hair-raising drive up and down the mountain on pitch-black Italian mountain roads. So, be prepared to have breakfast and dinner at the hotel during your entire stay. Dinner is fine dining with prices to match, featuring exceptional service and gourmet entrees. For simpler fare, lunch is served outdoors around the pool. I wish they would extend that to the evening hours; on an extended stay like ours, some nights you would just prefer simpler fare. Unlike a conventional pool, this pool is a thermal spring water pool. It supposedly has healing properties, but it was not my cup of tea, as I prefer a regular pool to cool off under the hot Tuscan sun. Castello di Velona offers an experience like no other. There is no need to nitpick, this mountain top resort slows you down and lets you regain your senses. Massimo and the team provided exceptional service. We enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you, Castello di Velona.
We stayed at Castello di Velona as one of the locations on our honeymoon and wanted to give honest feedback for other travellers in a similar position. We don’t normally stay in 5 star hotels as prefer laid back accomodation but booked it as a special treat. The positives are the views of the surrounding area and the history of the property which was really interesting to learn about. The staff were friendly on arrival and at reception but sit at a desk in reception where the atmosphere feels stilted and awkward to walk through every day which is what we did to access our room. Our room was interesting - the air con units were fitted by the windows and behind huge drape curtains so you had to choose whether to close the curtains to avoid bright light in the morning but at the cost of blocking the aircon units. Our bedroom door locked us out on several occasions and when you tried to open the door it was essentially pulling away from the wall/felt like it was going to break which didn’t make it feel safe to leave any belongings behind. The thermal pools and outdoor areas are stunning and similar to what you see online however the pools aren’t refreshing due to being thermal so bear this in mind if you book in the height of summer. I booked a massage treatment which they had arranged for the wrong day and when I did go for it, the lady was dripping sweat all over me and it was extremely unpleasant and definitely not worth paying €180. The food and drink is completely overpriced, the cheapest glass of wine on the menu is €22! If you drive 2 minutes down the hill you can have delicious brunello or similar for €10 which is much nicer. The breakfast buffet was very basic, you could get yogurt, fruit, croissants included but if you wanted any sort of eggs, pancakes, anything which would otherwise be included in other hotels you pay a steep addition. The hotel does not have the authentic Tuscan charm we had hoped for and overall wasn’t the 5 star experience we expected. I hope it will improve in the years to come and take feedback from visitors as we have read several similar ones to our experience too.
This is my most favorite place in the whole world. My new happy place. My parents brought me here to spoil me because I’ve been having a hard couple of years. They really know how to do a vacation. This place is INCREDIBLE!!! The rooms are so cozy and homy. The spa, the food, the pool, the view and the staff are just out of this world. I especially loved the pool and spa and wine tasting with their Sommelier. Thank you so much for a recuperating experience and my new favorite hotel ever. My favorite part is the emotional showers 🤩
My husband and I stayed at Castello di Velona in Tuscany in June 2023, and our experience at the property itself was truly wonderful. We would have easily given this stay five stars. The castle is beautiful and sits high above the Tuscan countryside, giving you exactly the old-world charm you hope for when visiting Tuscany. We spent several days enjoying the pool, drinking champagne, and taking in the incredible views of the rolling hills. We also enjoyed wonderful wine tastings both on-site and off-site, along with beautiful breakfasts and dinners at the hotel. It was a memorable and romantic experience. Unfortunately, there is one issue that has kept us from giving five stars. During our stay, we purchased hundreds of dollars worth of wine from the hotel and arranged to have it shipped home to the United States. After we returned home, there were complications with the shipment, and we contacted the hotel several times to try to resolve the issue. Over the next two years, we repeatedly followed up, but the wine was never delivered and eventually our attempts to communicate with the hotel went unanswered. We are still out the money for the wine we purchased. It is disappointing because we genuinely loved this property and had such a wonderful stay. We are leaving this review in the hope that someone from the hotel will see it and finally help resolve the issue. Aside from this experience, we truly loved Castello di Velona and would have been happy to give it five stars. We simply hope the hotel will take this opportunity to make right an issue that has remained unresolved since our 2023 stay.
