Privacy Policy

Who we are
Margot is a US-based wedding venue marketplace that helps couples discover venues worldwide and contact them directly. This policy explains what we collect when you use margot.co (and related subdomains like gomargot.co), how we use it, and the choices you have. Margot is the data controller for personal information collected through the site.
Information we collect
- Account information — your name and email when you sign up.
- Google sign-in — if you choose "Sign in with Google," we receive your name, email, profile picture, and Google account ID. We never see your Google password.
- Inquiries and messages — the wedding date, guest count, budget, and the messages you exchange with venues through Margot.
- Saved venues and shortlists — venues you save and notes you add.
- Payment information — when paid features launch, Stripe will process payments. We do not store full card numbers; we receive a token, the last four digits, card brand, and billing country to show in your account.
- Product analytics — we use PostHog to understand how the product is used (pages viewed, features clicked, basic session events). Analytics events are pseudonymized and used in aggregate to improve Margot.
- Device and usage data — IP address, browser type, and interaction logs, used to operate and secure the service.
- Communications — messages you send to Margot support.
How we use information
- To create your account and run features like saved venues, inquiries, and messaging.
- To deliver your inquiries to the right venue and notify you when they reply.
- To improve search relevance, recommendations, and listing quality.
- To process payments and manage subscriptions (via Stripe) when paid features launch.
- To prevent fraud and abuse, and to meet legal obligations.
- To send service emails such as inquiry confirmations, replies, and password resets. We don't send marketing emails without your consent.
Sharing
When you submit an inquiry, the contents go to the venue you contacted. We also use trusted infrastructure providers to run the service:
- Cloud hosting and database (to store and serve your data)
- Transactional email providers (to deliver inquiries and replies)
- Stripe (to process payments when paid features launch)
- Google (for "Sign in with Google")
- PostHog (for product analytics)
These providers act on our behalf under data-processing agreements. We do not sell personal information, we do not "share" it as that term is defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Where venue listings come from
Some venues are created and edited by their owners. Others are sourced from publicly available information, including third-party places data such as Google Places. Unclaimed listings may contain photos, descriptions, and contact details aggregated from public sources; venue owners can claim and correct their listing at any time by emailing hello@gomargot.co.
Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in and to understand how the site is used. See our Cookie Policy for the full list.
Your choices
- Access, correct, or delete your account information from your account settings, or by emailing hello@gomargot.co.
- Unsubscribe from non-essential emails using the link in any email we send. Service emails (like inquiry replies) will still arrive while your account is active.
California residents (CalOPPA & CCPA)
If you live in California, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect about you and how we use it.
- Access a copy of that information.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Delete your information, subject to legal exceptions.
- Opt out of "sale" or "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising — we don't do either, so there's nothing to opt out of, but the right is here for the record.
- Non-discrimination — we won't penalize you for exercising any of these rights.
Do Not Track: we don't currently respond to browser DNT signals because there's no consistent standard, but we also don't track you across other sites.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@gomargot.co. We'll verify your request against your account before acting on it.
EEA, UK & Swiss residents (GDPR)
If you're in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, our legal bases for processing are:
- Contract — to provide the account and features you signed up for.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and improve it.
- Consent — for non-essential cookies and analytics where consent is required. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation — to comply with applicable laws.
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your data, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. To exercise any of these, email hello@gomargot.co. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
International transfers: Margot is based in the United States. When we transfer personal data outside the EEA/UK, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses and equivalent safeguards.
Data retention
We keep account data while your account is active and for a reasonable period after closure to comply with legal obligations and resolve disputes. Inquiry records are retained so venues can respond and so you can refer back to past conversations.
Security
We use industry-standard safeguards including encryption in transit, role-based access controls, and least-privilege database policies. No system is perfectly secure; if you suspect unauthorized access, email hello@gomargot.co.
Children
Margot is for adults planning weddings. It's not intended for anyone under 18, and we don't knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll post the new version here and update the "last updated" date above. For material changes we'll provide additional notice.
