A castle that also serves as an agritourism farm, its history: Dominating the Arno Valley, northeast of Incisa and about twenty kilometers from Florence, along the Cassia Vetus road, stands this solid quadrilateral structure, considered one of the most beautiful castles in the area. The Castellano Tower—formerly the Viesca Castle—overlooks the valley and the village of Incisa from a strategically ideal location. It belonged to Countess Willa, from whom it passed to her son, Marquis Ugo of Tuscany, who in 927 sold it to Count Guido Werre (Guido Guerra), of the famous Guidi family. The feudal ownership was reconfirmed to the Guidi family in 967, in 1191 (by Emperor Henry VI), and by Frederick II in 1220. Later, the Tower passed to the Castellani family, whose name it still bears today. Their prosperity began in the 14th century with Lotto and his son Vanni. Michele di Vanni di Lotto was a prominent figure in the life of the Florentine Republic in the second half of the 14th century. Poliziano stayed there in the 15th century. In 1751, the Castellani were listed among the Florentine patricians, and the tower was gradually transformed into a villa. It is certainly a construction with a specific defensive purpose, equipped with two towers: a more massive one on the southwest corner, lowered in the last century, and a taller one originally serving as a keep, still featuring its corbeled projection. The entire perimeter of the building is embanked, and part of the battlements still remain at the top. The complex presents itself as a collection of buildings from various eras; even the arches supported by octagonal columns with sculpted leaf capitals facing each other within the courtyard are from different eras and styles. Numerous openings, the result of its conversion first into a stately home and then into a farm, break up the massive curtain walls. The internal courtyard leads to the three upper floors and the basement. In 1938, the owners entrusted its restoration to the Superintendence of Monuments. During World War II, the Uffizi statues were housed in the castle to protect them from the conflict. After the war, restoration work resumed. Today, the structure is home to an agritourism business and can only be visited from the outside.
